He belonged to Tanjore and was the son of Narayana of the Kausikagotra. Pedda Sastri may be identical with the author of Vedanta Pariblasa which has been published by this Department as No. 80 of the T. S. S. He was a great Vedic scholar and grammarian. His teacher was one Rangaratkadhvarindra of Kandaramaniky a village in Tanjore. This Ranganathadhvarin was the maternal grandfather of Narayana and is known to have written a commentary called Makaranda on Patanjali's Mahabhasya and another Purnima on Kaumudi. Remarks- The introductory stanzas prove that there are six different Chandovicitis attributed to Pingalaniga. The Chandoviciti of Patanjali is common to all Vedas alike. Rgveda has three. Chandovicitis and Yajus, one. The Nidana Chandoviciti on Sama is written by Patanjali. It is not known whether the Ms. of Patanjali's Chandoviciti has been discovered anywhere.
