qualities must be a modification of the original primeval matter known as the praksti. This Praksti is extremely subtle in as much as it gets itself transformed into Buddhi (intellect ), Manas (mind), Antaḥkaraņa (heart) which are supposed to be psychical in character, in general. The Praksti is not gross but it is extremely fine, and it is so much pervasive that it leaves nothing out of itself in the universe. The whole universe is a modification of the fundamental matter known as the Praksti.
Spirit or the Self-principle is exactly contradictory of the Praksti. Here the Praksti is unintelligent or (jada ); the term jada is not here applicable in the sense of being inert or inactive, but it is used to indicate the absence of consciousness in it. The Spirit is only pure and undivided consciousness. The Spirit appears in the form of self, and it is different from buddhi (intelligence), manas(mind), senses and the body. The nature of Purusa or the Self is unfailing light (sadā. prakásasvarūpa-8975ATTF969). It is the everlasting source of all illumination because of which the Praksti becomes visible in all forms. Consciousness is its constitutive nature. Consciousness, according to the Sámkhya, is not an adventitious character of the soul as the Nyāya Vais'eșikas think. It is not of the form of bliss but it is simply consciousness which serves as the source of all illumination.
The Praksti or the primordial-matter remains inactive in its state of equilibrium (Sămyāvasthapakyt) of the three qualities (Triguņāh) of which it is composed. The three guņas are three constituent
