PREFACE
The lines on which the work of the Descriptive Catalogue of Manuscripts in the Government Manuscripts Library at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Poona, projected in several volumes, is being carried on, have already been explained by me in my preface to the Descriptive Catalogue of Năţaka Manuscripts (Vol. XIV) published in 1937 and also in the preface to the Descriptive Catalogue of Alamkāra, Samgita and Nāțya Manuscripts (Vol. XII) published in 1936. The present volume containing a description of the Kāvya Manuscripts in the Government Manuscripts Library is Part I of Section XIII, which comprises not only Kavyas proper but also Caritas, Campüs etc. In view of this wide scope of the Section at least three more parts of the Descriptive Catalogue of this Section will have to be published. This catalogue has been prepared in accordance with the plan of the departmental work on the Descriptive Catalogue of the Govt. Mss. sanctioned by the Executive Board of the Institute in 1935 and carried on by me since ther with the help of two graduate assistants Mr. M. M. Patkar, B.A. and Mr. S. N. Savadi, B.A. With the help of these assistants I have been able to prepare the press-copies of nearly ten volumes pertain, ing to the following sections : ... Section III Vedāngas ( Nirukta, Chandas etc.-)
.: IV Kalpasūtras, Gulba sútras etc. . ., XIII Kavyas, Stotras, prose kāvyas etc.

The progress of the Descriptive Catalogue work made by me as outlined above does not include the progress made by other scholars to whom different sections were assigned by the Institute several years ago. A detailed report of the progress of the entire scheme of the Descriptive Catalogue of Govt. Mss. upto 31-3-1940 will be found in the Report of the Manuscript department of the
