The Nyāyakośa edited by Mahamahopadhāya Bhimācārya Jhalakikar was first published as early as in 1874. It then consisted of only 267 pages. Later the Kośa was so thoroughly revised and so substantially enlarged ( the number of pages increased nearly fourfold) by the Editor himself that it could be described as an entirely new work. Mahamahopadhyāya Bhimācārya, according to his own testimony, worked on this revision for an average of nine hours every day throughout a period of eight years from 1885 onwards. Ever since its révised and enlarged second edition was published in 1893, the Nyāyakośa has been hailed as an indispensable aid for the study of and research in Indian philosophy in general and Nyayadarśana in particular.
In course of time, the Nyāyakośa had the advantage of further critical revision by another distinguished Pandit, Mabāmahopadhyāya Vasudevaśāstri Abhyankar. This third edition prepared by Mahamahopādhyāya Vasudevaśāstri was published by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in 1928. Now, after fifty years, the fourth edition, which, incidentally, is just a reprint of the third edition, of this prestigious publication of the Institute is being issued on the occasion of the celebration of the Institute's Diamond Jubilee.
I have no doubt that all serious students of Nyāya will heartily welcome this long-awaited re-appearance of the Nyāyakośa.
