the bhasya of the Sutra 5-24, Siddhasena records the opinion of the followers of 'Śäläturiya' that dhvani (suggestive notion) and sphota (connotative implication) are different from each other: tadvän dhvanir-eva ca sabdahśrotragrahaṇaḥ, na sphoṭaḥ śäläturīya matānusäri-vaiyakarana-nikāya parikalpitaḥ..... Since Siddhasena gani lived between c. A. D. 690-7707, and the mean date for his commentary arguably seems c. A.D. 760-65, we now have an unambiguous reference to 'Śäläturiya' which is at least 375 years anterior to the one encountered in the Ganaratnamahodadhi. Predictably, Siddhasena gani must have had before him an earlier written or oral tradition which so reported: hence this fact lends a very firm support to, and positively stipulates Cardona's palpably well-considered assertion.

The editor, in his preface, however, does not quote the original verse/passage from the Trikändasesa, but quotes there from Vardhamana Süri cited also by Cardona. (Also see the 'Introduction' to the selfsame work, edited in this case by Pt. Nārāyaṇadatta Tripathi, 23rd edition, Gorakhapur S. 1993 / A. D. 1937, p. 2, for the identification of Salátur.)
5. Umāsvāti was a pre-Śvetämbara pontiff who belonged, according to his own colophon, to the Ucchairnāgara-śākhā of the main northern Nirgrantha stream. He was neither Yapaniya nor Digambara as I elsewhere have discussed. Siddhasena gani, the commentator, plausibly lived in the ancient Pățalā and Modhera tract, located within northeastern Gujarat.
