Preface Jainism is a way of life. The Jain Philosophy has been proliferated across the globe largely by the believers in Jainism who have practiced this philosophy. Unlike many other religions, Jainism has not been promoted by kings or monks but it certainly has inspired many people to learn from the teachings of our revered Tirthankaras. Even in this age of high speed information technology to share knowledge across the globe, the best way to inspire people is to live the way you want them to live. This is what Jainism has always been about.
I am delighted to learn that a learned scholar of the caliber of Dr. Kumarpalbhai Desai has agreed to edit this book highlighting the tenets of Jainism and the Jaina way of life. The wide range of topics covered in this compilation range from simplistic to in-depth analysis. Yet, there is something for everyone to learn and practice in each of these scholarly articles. We are very grateful to Dr. Kumarpalbhai Desai for his efforts in editing this compilation. We are also very grateful to all authors who agreed to contribute to this work, which I am sure will serve as a great reference to all students of Jainism. The subjects covered in this book range from Jaina philosophy to the relevance and practical application of Jainism in today's environment. The articles have very effectively deliberated upon the relevant topics which present a very practical view. The more we read it, the clearer our thoughts become.
This is a part of SMJV's efforts in inspiring the jainas to get a better grasp of their beliefs and for the non-jainas to learn about jainism. In this present socioeconomic turmoil across the globe, coupled with changing lifestyles, fast paced life and stressed individuals, and anxiety driven culture, Jainism offers a way for peaceful coexistence, stress deescalation and overall prosperity. The concept of Ahimsa and Aparigraha, if imbibed in their true sense, can bring out the all round development in society.
As a believer and follower of Jainism over nine decades, I have experienced peace and tranquility around me, despite being immersed in the complexities of business and family. I wish to encourage the younger generation to learn and practice these tenets of Jainism which will not only make them successful but also a better individuals. I do not wish to advertise my faith but certainly wish to stress that it is one of the better alternatives in improving the quality of life.
The present book is an objective commentary on Jaina Philosophy. The studies thoughts expressed in each article are compelling enugh to seek more knowledge in these areas as well as source of immense knowledge and inspiration one needs to link this to his or her own life and circumstances and evaluate on how he or she can benefit from this. I am sure there is something for each one of us to learn from here. I wish you happy reading and hope you enjoy this presentation from SMJV.
