first volum, several rare texts like the Ganakarika, the Tattvasaṁgraha of Santaraksita, the Samarāngana Sutradhära, the Sangito panişad-säroddhara, the Ullagha. Raghava of Somesvara, and Catalogues of Palm-leaf manuscripts from the Bhaņdāras at Jesalmer, Patan and Cambay, could all be published only with the generous help and loans of manuscripts from Sarvašri Mini Kāntivijayaji, Catura vijayaji, Punyavijayaji, Hamsavijayaji and Ramanikavijayaji.
Muni Punyavijaya is himself a very deep scbolar of Sanskrit, Prakrits, Apabhramsa and old Gujarati language. Not only this but he is a good scholar of various Indian philosophical systems, Chandasśāstra, literature, Vyākaraña etc.
Muni Punyavijayaji had the good fortune to learn, in his younger days, from Pandit Sukblalji and Muni Sri Chaturavijayaji. Jointly with his guru Muni Chaturavijayaji, he edited in 1930 a tough text like the Vasudevahindi of which only one palm-leaf manuscript is available and being a text of about fifth century A.D. the selection of various readings of this Prakrit text was indeed an uphill task. The Vasudevahindi is a Jaida version of the lost Bịhatkathā of Guņādhya and it is a mine of cultural and linguistic data for students of Indology.
In fact research activity of Muni Punyavijayaji had started much earlier. As early as 1917 A.D. he edited the Sanskrit play Kaumudi-Mitrāuanda-Nataka of Muni Rāmachandra. Next year he edited one more work, Prabuddha-RauhiņeyaNataka of Muni Rāmabhadra ( 13th cent. A.D.) and the Dharmabhyudaya-ChāyaNataka of Ācārya Meghaprabha. In 1928, he edited the Aindrastuti-Caturvimšatika of Upadhyāya Sri Yasovijaya.
One most important work, however, was the editing (Jointly with his guru Muni Sri Chaturavijayaji) of the BỊhatkal pa-bhasya with Niryukti and Tıkā,
published in six volumes between the years 1983 and 1942. The learned introduction to this work gave, for the first time, a first-class new approach to the problem concerning authorship of Niryuktis, Bhāşyas, Cūrņis etc. The Intro. duction was written long ago but due to unforseen circumstances the last volume containing the introduction could be published much later,
He was not only interested in the editing of works. During all these years he has been rearranging several manuscripts collections, collecting, collating or acquiring manuscripts, and studying the format, scripts, age, etc. of the several manuscripts handled by him. An intensive study thus made by him is published in his famous big article (a small monograph in itself) entitled Bhāratiya Śramaņa Samskrti ane Lekhanakalā published first in the Jaina Citrakal padruma, vol. 1 (1935), and later in a separate book form.
In 1938, he edited the Fitakalpa-Sutra of Jinabhadragani K$amāśramaņa (sixth century A.D.). In 1944, came another important text in Prakrit, namely, the Katharatnakośa of Sri Devabhadragaại. In 1949, he edited the Dharmabhyudaya Mahakavya of Udayaprabbasūri.
