ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION : A MENACE TO HUMANITY
land pollution, noise pollution, radio-active pollution and thermal pollution etc. These forms of pollution have caused many visible and invisible harms to mankind. There is release of materials through various sources in atmosphere making air unfavourable for breathing. Different kinds of substances mixing with water destroy its purity and cause danger to life. Reckless human acts have made landscape naked that generates several problems for a peaceful life.
Man is mad with his scientific knowledge and skill. He tries to win over nature and nature reacts to his unfolded sufferings. Man has deepened the problem of pollution with high mechanisation, speedy transportation and over industrialisation. Pollution is the creation of man beacuse it is he who has polluted the environmental conditions, i.e. air and water, soil and topography, climate and vegetation. Chemical reactions caused by nuclear explosions and many scientific devices of man have brought about undesirable changes in environment. Pollution is rampant in air, water and land. The industrial units pour in atmosphere, Sulphur di-Oxide i.e. highly injurious to health. The smoke that comes out after burning of coal is highly harmful. The Chloride that emits from Alluminium factories pollutes air and causes immature death to plants and trees. Various insecticides produced by scientists have fatal effects upon our health. Due to water pollution millions of fishes are killed as a result of toxic sewage and industrial wastes. The excess use of chemical fertilisers has made food stuffs non-eatable. The smoke from ovens, chimneys and vehicles pollutes environment. The foul smell from drains and garbage in urban areas affect our free movement.
The metropolitan cities are hard-hit by the problem of pollution. In wake of modern facilities of life the number of vehicles has gone up enormously. New factories are being opened in suburbs to meet the demand of teeming population. The drainage and sewrage system is not upto the mark. The problem of water pollution is acute. Calcutta is a glaring example of air, water and noise pollution. Pollution has disturbed the peace and happiness of all big cities of the world. Bhopal Gas Tragedy is still alive in our mind-a horrible picture of human destruction.
In modern scientific world man has immense materialistic attainments, but he is living under great stress and strain. Human life has become more complex and there is no peace of mind. Man has to face many problems i.e. unemployment and indiscipline, malnutrition and corruption, chaos and anarchy. He perceives no end of his problems and life has no taste and colour. It is of late that human mind further is laxed with a new grave problem--the problem of environmental pollution. It has made human life miserable. Now pollution has become a global issue-a burning question of the time. Man strives tirelessly for a clean environment but finds no easy way to maintain it.
In general terms "Environment" means our surroundings that comprise of air, water, land etc. while 'pollution' refers to the acts of polluting, destroying the purity and sanctity of our habitat. Thus environmental pollution means making our surroundings unhealthy and unfavourable for living by our various reckless acts. Environmental pollution is in different forms-air pollution, water pollution,
The sudden explosions have change the cycle of seasons and whether conditions. It has resulted into poor yield from farms and orchards. Tastelessness has developed in citrus fruits and food stuffs. Pollution
