positions of power and yet have love for religion. It is people with faith in their religion that can protect it and serve its cause." I felt extremely flattered by his words of praise or appreciation. I submitted that it was all his grace and my good fortune to have had the chance of using my knowledge of law for a noble cause. My faith in religion grew stronger. My contact with Shantisagar Maharaj became more intimate; others who came to know about these matters developed an unexpected respect for me. During the period of stay of Shantisagar Maharaj at Kunthalagiri, I visited that place of pilgrimage three or four times. Each time I stayed for a couple of days. I found that the Maharaj was a person of great vision; he knew the weaknesses of human nature and the limitations of ordinary men and women. He would expound the principles of religion in simple and understandable language. He exemplified by his own conduct all that he preached to others. He would not put people into embarrassing situations. He would never press people to take vows. If anybody went to him with a request for administration of some vow, he would caution him or her and test his or her mental capacity to keep it up. My wife prayed to the Maharaj to give her the vow of Ahosha (not eating after sunset). He cautioned her and told her that I was going to be a big man' and that she might not find it possible to keep up the vow. My wife submitted that she would keep up the vow whatever positions I might reach. She was given the vow and she has kept it up both in letter and spirit. His utterance was prophetic and I rose to the highest position in the Judiciary. My wife's practice of the vow has naturally compelled all of us in the family to take food before sun-set whenever I am at the head-quarters.

According to Government Servants' Conduct Rules, I could
