________________ Presidential Address 779 emotional, that is to say, an idealism in which the world is not conceived either as Idea or as Will or Imagination but as Emotion, which it is the business of Purusa to get rid of. The Emotionalism or Emotional Idealism, if one can use such an expression without inconsistency, was evidently preceded by a stage represented in the Bhagavadgitā, in which the cognitive and conative and emotional elements of idealism were still held together in the functions assigned to सत्व, रजस् and तमस्. Moreover, Vijnanabhiksu restores the view in which Prakřti is regarded as the dravya or dharmi of which ge ya and Hta are dharmas or attributes as well as constituent elements. The system of Yoga which came into existence as a complement to Sainkhya retained its pristine purity till a century or two after the death of Gautama Buddha. In the Sūtras of Patanjali the white light of spirituality is somewhat dimmed by a black jet of faufas and fafes. Later, the system split into two branches, the Hatha Yoga and the Rāja Yoga, of which the former associated itself with the degraded forms of Śakti-worship and of Mahayāna Buddhism, while the latter restored purity to the system under the influence of Vedānta. The problem of the Vaiseshika was to distinguish ātmā from anātmā by the scientific method of investigating properties of things. Its consequent disregard of the problem of God in the Sūtras has been misunderstood as a mild form of atheism. But subsequently it allied itself with Nyāya which is enthusiastic about developing a system of logic, and
