The last of these is only another name of Yasastilakachampú, for a full analysis of which a reference may be made to Dr. Peterson's II Peport, pp. 33-49. The lirst three are not otherwise known). In the first part of the colophon above quoted Somadeva las been styleil Tarkika-chakravarttin and hence a work by him on Nyaya may also be expected. In the Stotra. Chatusthavatika Vidananda makes frequent references to and quotations from Dhyana-paddlati of Somadeva Suri. This may be another work by our author. What make Somadeva's works of a very great importance are the learning of the author which they reflect and the masterly style in which they are composed. The prose of Yasastilaka vies with that of Bana and the poctry at places with that of Magha. The Nitivakyamrita is a sort ol work second only to the lately discovered Artha-sástra of Chanakva, whom Somade a very much imitates both in matter as well as style. From the coloplion of Yanastilaka we learn that the author wrote in the Saka vcar 881 (Siddhartha Samatsara) du: ing the reign of Krishnaraja III . l'eterson's II Report, pp. 47-49 and 150).
Among the Karanja manuscripts a comincntary "Sabdarhavachandrika" on Jaincndra Vyakarana is mentioned as done by Somadeva. But this Somadcya is to be distinguished from the author of Yasastilaka, as is evident from the following colophon of the work refered to.
This proves that the author of Sabdarnavachandrika was a protégé of the Silahára prince Virabhojadeva, and wrote the work in the Saka year 1127 (Krodhana samvatsara) A.D. 1049.
The Vardhamana-charita of this poet has been noticed,
and an extract froin it published by Asaga.
