________________ P. 163 THE THIRD ATONEMENT : MIXED ( mīsa; miśra or (tad)ubhaya ) . It is not necessary to dwell on the combination of confession and repentance (cf. supra 112 ). One confesses to the guru, and, following his directions, expresses regret for having acted badly (Vav Pith T 36 6-37 a). The originality of the mixed atonement seems to reside in two characteristics : 1) the expression of repentance is necessarily preceded by the confession, which is, on this occasion, addressed compulsorily to the teacher (compare on the contrary supra 140; 162); 2) the padikkamaņa is carried out immediately after the aloyana, and is pronounced according to the express prescriptions of the pastora, 1. Cf. Vav Pith 7 20 6 6 ff. : yasmin punaḥ pratisevite prāyascitte yadi guru-samaksam alocayati, alocya yo guru-samdisļaḥ pratikramati paścăc ca mithya-duskytam iti brüte, tada sudhyati, tat ... miśram. Ibid 37 a 2: parvam gurunām purata alocanā tad-anantaram tad-ade'sate mitkyaduşkyta-danam ity evam-rupam tad-ubhayam.
