AN EPITOME OF JAINISM the doctune of the Jainas is not to be recognised. In his famous scholium on the Brahma Sutras, Acharya Shankara, the ablest exponent of the Adwarta Vedanta philosophy while commenting ou the canon referred to, writes -
The Jainas admit of seven predicaments The Rudimentary such as (1) Teva (2) Ajiva (3) Asrava, Principles of Jain philo (4) Sambara, (5) Nirjard, (6) Bandha, and sophy as
(7) Moksha. These seven they admit and by Shankar
nothing beyond these.
Summarily speaking, the Jiva and the Azeva, are the two primary predicaments. The others are included in either of these two. Besides they admit of five composites or compounds from the above two categories and are designated as "Astika zas" or composites such as Jivastzkdya, Pudgaldstrkaya, Dharmastikaya, Adharndstikdya, and Akdshästik&ya They fancy, again, an infinite number of variations of these 'astskåyas' or composite and to all and each of these, they apply their so-called synthetic logic known by the name of Saptabhangi saya in the following manner
