________________ ( 56 ) Science of Omens. S'akunasároddhåra'-by Māņikyasūri in 11 chapters, 507 Verder. Prākrt. I. HISTORICAL. Kathāvali is a Prākṣta work in prose by Bhadreśvara Sûri who flourished in the time of Karņa. It contains lives of the 24 Tīrthankaras and Jain Pontiffs. The work is not only prior to Hemācārya's Paris'ista Parva published by the Asiatic Society of Bengal but also goes further than it. Paris'ista Parva ends with tha life of Vajrasvāmin, while the present work goes as far as Haribhadra (6th century). The work is very extensive containing about 24000 granthas, but we should only publish the really historical portion (from the life of Mahāvīra to the end). The Pattan palm-leaf MS is the only MS known of this work. Being written in Samvat 1497, it is the latest of all the palm-leaf MSS at Pattan. Siddhaserādi Caritra contains the lives of the Jain Ācāryas Siddhasena, Pādalipta, Mallavādi and Bappabhatti. The life of Bappabhatti given here confirnis the account of the conversion of Vākpati, the author of Gaudaraho. The lives are all anonymous, but as they are written in Prakrta, they are supposed to be old and reliable. The age of the MS is Samvat 1291. Kumārapula-Pratibodha,' a Prākrta poem in 5 Prastāvas on the conversion of Kamārapāla to Jainism by Hemācārya. The first 400 verses contain the history of Kumārapāla and Hemācārya. The rest of the poem consists of ethical and religious stories told by Hemācārya to Kumārapāla. The poem was composed in Samvat 1241 or, 12 years after Kumārapāla’s death. It was recited by the author to Mahendrasūri, the pupil of Hemācārya and possesses the stamp of authenticity. The MSS of the poem are not to be found elsewhere. The Pattan Bhandars contain only two palm-leaf MSS one complete and the other incomplete. Gaudavaho. There are 3 palm-leaf MSS of this famous historical work. 2 MSS of the text and 1 of the text with commentary and 1 paper MS ( written about Samvat 1480) with text | Printed by Hiralal Hamsaraj, Jamnagur.
