प्रस्तावना ।
इस त्रिवर्णाचार ग्रंथके कर्ता श्रीसोमसेन सूरि हैं । इस ग्रंथ में मुख्यतासे तीन वर्णोंके आचारका वर्णन है । प्रसंगवश यतिधर्मका वर्णन भी इस ग्रंथ में किया गया है। बीच बीचमें शूद्रों की चर्याका उल्लेखभी इसमें पाया जाता है । शय्योत्थान से लेकर शय्याशयन तककी प्रतिदिन की क्रियाओंका समावेश भी बड़ी योग्यता और खूबी के साथ किया गया है । मूल ग्रन्थ संस्कृत भाषा में है । उसीका यह हिंदी अनुवाद मूल सहित पाठकों की सेवामें उपस्थित किया जाता है । आशा है कमसे कम धर्मप्रेमी सज्जन इससे थोड़ा-बहुत लाभ उठावेंगे ।
ग्रन्थ प्रकाशक बाबू बिहारीलालजी कठनेराकी प्रेरणासे मैंने इस ग्रन्थका अनुवाद किया है । यद्यपि ग्रन्थका अनुवाद कई वर्षोंमें पूर्ण हुआ है तोभी इसके शुरू के १० अध्यायोंके अनुवाद प्रकाशक महोदयकी शीघ्रता के कारण अत्यन्त ही शीघ्रता करनी पड़ी है। बाद बीचके वर्षों में धीरे धीरे जितना अंश अनुवादित हो चुका था वह मुद्रित होता रहा। जब वह खतम हो गया तच पुनः प्रकाशक महोदयका तकाजा प्रारंभ हुआ अतः शेष भाग भी शीघ्रता करनी पड़ी । अत एव एक तो शीघ्रतावश ग्रन्थके अनुवाद में कहीं कहीं त्रुटियां हो गई हैं तथा कुछ त्रुटियां अज्ञान
भी हो गई हैं। मैं चाहता था कि उन त्रुटियों का मार्जन परिशिष्ट भागमें पूर्णतः करहूं पर फिरभी समयाभाव के कारण पूर्णतया नहीं करसका हूँ । अतः पाठकोंसे क्षमा प्रार्थना करता हूं कि वे त्रुटियों के स्थलोंको जैनागमके अनुसार समझने की कोशिश करें ।
इस ग्रन्थका अनुवाद मुद्रित प्रतिपरसे किया गया है जो कि मराठी अनुवादसहित कई वर्षों पहले मुद्रित हो चुकी है और कई स्थलोंमें अशुद्ध भी मुद्रित हुई है । एकवार मुझे एक लिखित प्रति भी कितना ही अनुवाद हो चुकनेके बाद मिली थी, सो भी बहुत कम समय के लिए मेरे पास रह सकी थी जो प्रायः अशुद्ध है पर फिरभी उससे सरसरी तौर पर कई स्थल शुद्ध किये गये हैं और कई स्थल ग्रन्थान्तरोंसे शुद्ध किये गये हैं तो भी कितने ही स्थल ज्यों के त्यों अशुद्ध रह गये हैं । इसके लिए भी पाठकों से क्षमा प्रार्थना है ।
'ग्रन्थ- संशोधन के विषयमें भी मैं क्षमा प्रार्थना करना चाहता हूं । ग्रन्थका संशोधन कहीं किसीने और कहीं किसीने मन चाहा किया है । संशोधकोनें ग्रन्थके संस्कृत मूल अवतरणों को कहीं रहने दिया है और कहीं निकाल दिया है । इसतरह और भी इधर उधरका पाठ छोड़ दिया है। कोई कोई वाक्य और श्लोक जो नीचे रखने चाहिए थे वे ऊपर और जो ऊपर रखने चाहिए थे वे नीचे रख दिये हैं। मुझे जहां तक खयाल है संशोधकोंने कई स्थलोंमें अनुवाद परिवर्तन भी कर ढाला है । अस्तु, एक हाथसे संशोधन होता तो अच्छा रहता ।
यद्यपि संहिता ग्रन्थोंपर मेरी पहलेसेही आस्था थी, ज्यों ज्यों इन ग्रन्थोंकी कूटता उड़ाना प्रारंभ किया त्यों त्यों मैं उनका विशेष विशेष आलोडन करने लगा। मुझे लोगों की छल-कपटके सिवा

## Acknowledgements

I have translated this treatise at the behest of Babu Biharilalji Kathneraki. Although the translation was completed over several years, the translation of the first 10 chapters had to be done very quickly due to the publisher's urgency. In the intervening years, the translated portions were printed as they were completed. When that was finished, the publisher's demand resumed, so the remaining part also had to be done quickly. Therefore, due to haste, there are some errors in the translation, and some errors are due to ignorance. I wanted to completely rectify these errors in the appendix, but due to lack of time, I could not do so completely. Therefore, I request the readers to try to understand the erroneous passages according to the Jain Agamas.

## Apologies

This translation was done from a printed copy, which was printed several years ago along with a Marathi translation and contains many errors. I also received a handwritten copy after a considerable portion of the translation was completed, but it was only with me for a short time and is also quite inaccurate. However, several passages were corrected from it, and many were corrected from other texts, but many passages remain incorrect. For this too, I apologize to the readers.

## Further Apologies

I also want to apologize regarding the editing of the treatise. The treatise has been edited by different people at different times, as they pleased. The editors have left the Sanskrit original verses in some places and removed them in others. They have also left out other parts of the text here and there. Some sentences and verses that should have been placed below have been placed above, and vice versa. As far as I know, the editors have also changed the translation in many places. It would have been better if the editing had been done by one person.

## Personal Reflections

Although I had faith in the canonical texts from the beginning, as I began to unravel their intricacies, I became increasingly fascinated by them. I began to see the deceit and hypocrisy of people...
