हिंसाविरत्यणुव्रतात् मातंगेन चांडालेन उत्तमः पूजातिशयः प्राप्तः ।
अस्य कथा। सुरम्यदेशे पोदनपुरे राजा महाबलः । नन्दीश्वराष्टम्यां राज्ञा अष्टदिनानि जीवामारणघोषणायां कृतायां बलकुमारेण चात्यन्तमांसासक्तेन कंचिदपि पुरुषमपश्यता राजोद्याने राजकीयमेण्ढकः प्रच्छन्नेन मारयित्वा संस्कार्य भक्षितः । राज्ञा च मेण्ढकमारणवार्तामाकर्ण्य रुष्टेन मेण्टकमारको गवेषयितुं प्रारब्धः । तदुद्यानमालाकारेण च वृक्षोपरिचटि. तेन स तन्मारणं कुर्वाणो दृष्टः । रात्रौ च निजभार्यायाः कथितं ततः प्रच्छन्नचरपुरुषेणाकर्ण्य राज्ञः कथितं । प्रभाते मालाकारोऽप्याकारितः । तेनैव पुनः कथितं । मदीयामाज्ञां मम पुत्रः खण्डयतीति । रुष्टेन राज्ञा कोट्टपालो भणितो बलकुमारं नवखण्डं कारयेति ततस्तं कुमारं मारणस्थानं नीत्वा मातङ्गमानेतुं ये गताः पुरुषास्तान् विलोक्य मातङ्गेनोक्तं प्रिये ! मातङ्गो ग्रामं गत इति कथय त्वमेतेषामित्युक्त्वा गृहकोणे प्रच्छन्नो भूत्वा स्थितः । तलारैश्चाकारिते मातङ्गे ! कथितं मातंग्या सोऽद्य ग्रामं गतः । भणितं च तलौरैः स पापोऽपुण्यवानद्य ग्रामं गतः कुमास्मारणात्तस्य बहुसुवर्णरत्नादिलाभो भवेत् तेषां वचनमाकर्ण्य द्रव्यलुब्धया तैया हस्तसंज्ञया स दर्शितो ग्रामं गत इति पुनः पुनर्भणन्त्या । ततस्तैस्तं गृहान्निःसार्य तस्य मारणार्थ स कुमारः समर्पितः । तेनोक्तं नास्य (य) चतुर्दशीदिने जीवघातं करोमि । ततस्तलारैः स नीत्वा राज्ञः कथितः देव ! अयं राजकुमार न मारयति । तेन च राज्ञः कथितं सर्पदष्टो मृतः श्मशाने निक्षिप्तः सर्वौषधिमुनिशररिस्य वायुना पुनर्जी वितोऽहं तत्पार्थे चतुर्दशीदिवसे मया जीवाहिंसाव्रतं गृहीतमतोऽद्य
