मग्गप्पभावणहं पवयणभक्तिप्पचोदिदेण मया
भणियं पवयणसारं पंचत्थियसंगहं सुत्तं ॥ १७३ ॥ इससे स्पष्ट है कि कुन्दकुन्दने अपना यह ग्रंथ किसी व्यक्तिविशेषके उद्देश्यसे अथवा उसकी प्रेरणाको पाकर नहीं लिखा, बल्कि इसका खास उद्देश्य 'मार्गप्रभावना' और निमित्तकारण 'प्रवचनभक्ति' है। यदि कुन्दकुन्दने शिवकुमार महाराजके सम्बोधनार्थ अथवा उनकी खास प्रेरणासे इस ग्रंथको लिखा होता तो वे इस पद्यमें या अन्यत्र कहीं उसका कुछ उल्लेख जरूर करते, जैसे कि भट्टप्रभाकरके निमित्त 'परमात्मप्रकाश' की रचना करते हुए योगीन्द्रदेवने जगह जगह पर ग्रंथमें उसका उल्लेख किया है। परंतु यहाँ मूल ग्रंथमें ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं, न प्राचीन टीकामें ही उसका उल्लेख मिलता है और न कुन्दकुन्दके किसी दूसरे ग्रंथसे ही शिवकुमारका कोई पता चलता है । इस लिये यह थ शिवकुमार महाराजके संबोधनार्थ रचा गया ऐसा माननेके लिये मन सहा तय्यार नहीं होता । संभव है कि एक विद्वानने किसी किम्बदंतीके आधार पर उसका उल्लेख किया हो और फिर दूसरेने भी उसकी नकल कर दी हो। इसके सिवाय, जयसेनाचार्यने 'प्रवचनसार' की टीकामें प्रथम प्रस्तावनावाक्यके द्वारा, 'शिवकुमार' का जो निम्न प्रकारसे उल्लेख किया है उससे शिवकुमार महाराजकी स्थिति और भी संदिग्ध हो जाती है
