स्वामी समन्तभद्र ।
उत्तर अभी नहीं दिया जा सकता, फिर भी विचार करते हुए इस सम्बधमें जो जो घटनाएँ सामने उपस्थित हुई हैं और उनसे जिस जिस समयका, जिस प्रकारसे अथवा जो कुछ बोध होता है उस सबैको पाठकोंके सामने रख देना ही उचित मालूम देता है, जिससे पाठकजन वस्तुस्थितिको समझकर विशेष अनुसंधानद्वारा ठीक समयको मालूम करनेमें समर्थ हो सकें, अथवा लेखकको ही विशेष निर्णयके लिये कोई खास सूचना दे सकें।
उमास्वाति-समय । (क) श्रवणबेलगोलके शिलालेखपरसे समन्तभद्रका परिचय देते हुए, यह बात पहले जाहिर की जा चुकी है कि समन्तभद्र 'उमास्वाति' आचार्य और उनके शिष्य 'बलाकपिच्छ' के बाद हुए हैं । यदि उमास्वातिका या उनके शिष्यका निश्चित समय मालूम होता तो उस परसे समन्तभद्रका आसन्न समय आसानीसे बतलाया जा सकता था, अथवा इतना तो सहजहीमें कहा जा सकता था कि समन्तभद्र उस समयके बाद और ई० सन् ४५० के पहले-दोनोंके मध्यवर्ती किसी समयमें हुए हैं। परन्तु उमास्वातिका समय अभीतक पूरी तौरसे निश्चित नहीं हो सका-उसकी भी हालत प्रायः समन्तभद्रके समय जैसी ही है और इस लिये उमास्वातिके संदिग्ध समयके आधार पर समन्तभद्रके यथार्थ समयकी बाबत कोई ऊंची तुली बात नहीं कही जा सकती।
(ख) नन्दिसंघकी पट्टावलीमें, उमास्वातिके आचार्य पद पर प्रतिष्ठित होनेका समय वि० सं० १०१ दिया है । साथ ही, यह भी लिखा है कि वे ४० वर्ष ८ महीने आचार्य पद पर रहे, उनकी आयु ८४ वर्षकी थी और सं० १४२ में उनके पट्टपर लोहाचार्य
