Kasaya Pahuda Sutta
[379. And there are other (stages) of the destruction of the perception and passion-deluding (karmas), which have entered into the state of being in two directions, from which the karma of the two directions has arisen. From that, they obtain the stages of the karma of the two directions up to an antarmuhurta (moment). 380. The stages of the karma of the two directions of right belief and wrong belief are less than seventy-two koḍākoḍī sāgaropamas. 381. And they are less than the last udvela-kandaka (stage). These are the decreases.]
The special meaning is that the highest stage of the karma of false belief is of the measure of seventy-two koḍākoḍī sāgaropamas, and its essence is found in the first moment of the sentient five-sensed false-believer who is endowed with intense afflicted dispositions and causes the highest bondage of the karma of false belief. This is the highest primary stage-karma-abode of false belief. One moment less than seventy-two koḍākoḍī sāgaropamas is the second stage-karma-abode of the false-believer. Two moments less than seventy-two koḍākoḍī sāgaropamas is the third stage-karma-abode of the false-believer. In this way, the fourth, fifth, and so on stages occur by decreasing one moment each time. This sequence should be continued until the lowest stage-bondage of false belief is obtained. The measure of the lowest stage-bondage of the karma of false belief is less than the one-part-of-an-innumerable-part of a palya, and it is found in the one-sensed being with extremely mild afflicted dispositions. The purport of saying this is that just as there are as many stages of the highest stage-bondage of false belief down to the lowest stage-bondage, so many are the stage-karma-abodes of false belief. Their measure is as many moments as there are from less than one-part-of-an-innumerable-part of a palya to seventy-two sāgaropamas.
These above-mentioned stage-karma-abodes are found in the beings who bind the karma of false belief. In addition to these, there are other stage-karma-abodes of false belief that are found in the right-believers who are devoid of the bondage of false belief but possess the existence of false belief. To explain them, Yativṛṣabha-ācārya says in the Uttara-sūtra:
Cūrṇi: In addition to these, there are other stage-karma-abodes of the karma of false belief, which are found at the time when the stage-karma of false belief of the destroyer of the perception and passion-deluding (karma) who has entered into the state of non-return becomes lower than the stage-karma-abode of the bondage-prone of the one-sensed being. They are as many as the moments of an antarmuhūrta.
Now, the stage-karma-abodes of right belief, false belief, and right belief-false belief are being told.
Cūrṇi-sūtra: The stage-karma-abodes of the karma of right belief and the karma of false belief are less than seventy-two koḍākoḍī sāgaropamas, and they are also less than the last udvela-kandaka (stage).
The special meaning is that the stage-karma-abodes of right belief and false belief are only within an antarmuhūrta.
