have been its earlier use in Indian literature, whether Brahamanical, Buddhist, or Jain; but as the custom of erecting monuments over the ashes or over the relics of departed saints prevailed chiefly among the Buddhists and the Jains, the word (or one of the Prakrit equivalents, Pali chaitya, etc.) is especially characteristic of their literature. In this sense it is practically synonymous with stupa, 'tope', in India (though stupa is rasker architecture and chaitya the religious, term) and has various equivalents in the countries of Asia to which the custom extended with the spread of Buddhism At a later period chaitya was used more generally to denote any shrine, reliquary or sacred tree. This is clear not only from the references in the literature, but also from the express statement in a Sanskirt dictionary of synonymous, the Viva pravasa of Mahesvara, kavi (AD_IIII), quoted by the Commentary of Mallinatha, (14th Century A.D) on Kalidas's Meghaduta, Verse 23.

चैत्य चिता शब्द से निष्पन्न हुआ विशेषणरूप है, याने उसकी व्युत्पत्ति के अनुसार चेत्यशब्द का मूल अर्थ चिता का सम्बन्धी होता है। उदाहरण के तौरपर मृतक मनुष्य की राखके ऊपर चिना हुआ स्तूप (Tumulus ) या उस स्थान के चिन्ह स्वरूप मे रोपित किया हुआ वृक्ष । इस शब्द का सबसे पुराना अर्थ भारतीय साहित्य मे, चाहे वह साहित्य वैदिक हो, बौद्ध हो, या जैन हो यही किया गया देख पडता है । परन्तु स्वर्गवासी महात्माओ के अवशिष्ट 'अस्थि या भस्मपर इस प्रकार के स्मारक बनाने का रिवाज मुख्यतया बौद्धो और जैनो में ही प्रवर्तित होने से शब्द (जिसका एक प्राकृत भाषा या पालीका रूप 'चेतिय इत्यादि होता है) इन्ही के साहित्य का खास पारभाषिक शब्द है । इस अर्थ मे वस्तुत भारतवर्ष मे मिलने वाले स्तूप शब्द का पर्याय बनता है । स्तूप और चैत्य मे इतना ही फर्क है कि स्तूप शब्द शिल्पशास्त्र से और चैत्य शब्द धर्मशास्त्र से सम्बन्ध रखता है। एशियाखंड मे बुद्धधर्म पसरने के साथ २ ही जिन २ देशो मे वह रिवाज प्रचलित होता गया त्यो त्यों उन देशो की भाषा में उस शब्द के अनेक पर्याय शब्द उत्पन्न होते गये। गत समय मे यह चैत्य शब्द विशेष साधारणरीत्या किसी भी मंदिर,
