conspicuous of his victories were those over the Sâmbhara king Armorâja, and the Silhåra king Mallikarjuna. During his reign the kingdom of Gujarat had reached its highest glory. The enemies having been subdued, he could devote himself to religious matters. Minister Bahadadeva introduced to him the great Hemachandra, whose great learning gratified his religious curiosity. Daily he heard his religious sermons and the doctrine of non-injury went straight into his heart. He adopted the Jain faith and took the vows of a Jain layman. The date of this event is given by Jinamandana as Samyat 1216 the second day of the bright half of Mâgha. He was zealous in this new faith adopted by him and built many Jain temples throughout his kingdom, issued orders for the prohibition of slaughter in his kingdom and also stopped the seven vices. Two such edicts of non-injury to animals issued by Kumarapala's feudatories of Marwad :-(1) by Panapakéa and (2) by Âblanadeva dated Samvat 1207—have come to light (vide appendix III). He made pilgrimages to Mts. Satruñjaya and Girnar. He died in Samvat 1229 at the nature age of 80.
The Mss. Material. The present edition of the Moharâjaparâjaya is based on the following three mss. desiguated as A, B, & C.
A is a paper ms. comtaining the complete text belonging to the Mss. collection of Pravartaka Kârtivijayaji at Baroda. It consists of 25 leaves. It is a recent copy made from an oid ms. It is generally correct both in the Sanskrta and Prakrta portions.
B is an incomplete palmı-leaf ms. belonging to the Deccan College Mss. Library. It consists of 105 leaves, of which leaves 65, 67-69, 73, 75, 80, 83-91 are missing. For a detailed description of the ms., see Kielhorn's Report on the search for Sanskrta mss. in the Bombay Presidency during the year 1880–81. The ms. is not dated but from the style of writing it appears to have been written in the middle of the 13th century.
C is an incomplete, mutilated and much damaged ms, from the Deccan College Mss. Library. Many pages have, owing to dampness, stuck to gether. It consists of 44 leaves and is dated Samvat 1579. The colophon ruos as under:___ संवत् १५७९ वर्षे श्रीचित्र (कूटे) श्रीखरतरगच्छे श्रीजिनवर्धनसरिसन्ताने श्रीजिनचन्द्रसरिश्रीजिनसागरसूरिश्रीजिनहर्षसरिश्रीजिनचन्द्रसरिशिष्येण विमललाममुनिना मोहपराजयनाटकमलेखि ।
This ms. seems to have been copied from the palm-leaf ms. B. Both these mss. belonged to a collection of the Kharatara Gachchha bought by Dr. Kielhora at Pattan. They are on the whole correct and reliable. The Prakrta portion, too, is generally correct.
