જૈન ચિત્ર-કલ્પલતા
ચિત્ર ૮ : સરવરતી (વિ. સં. ૧૨ ૧૮) જુદાજુદા પ્રકારની સુંદર મૃતિએ, જૈન મંદિરોમાં અને તાડપત્રની તેમજ કાગળની હસ્તલિખિત પ્રતોમાં જુદા જુદા પ્રકારનાં ચિત્રો, તથા જૈનસાહિત્યમાં જુદા જુદા પ્રકારનાં ભિન્નભિન્ન સ્વરૂપોની ક૯૫*નાએ જેટલી વિસ્તૃત સ્વરૂપમાં મળી આવે છે તેટલી ભારતના બીજા કે સંપ્રદાયમાં મળી આવતી *નથી. સરસ્વતીની મૂર્તિઓ, ચિત્રો તથા સ્વરૂપને લગતા એક જુદા જ વિસ્તૃત નિબંધ મેં તૈયાર કર્યો છે જે જૈન સત્યપ્રકાશ” માસિક માં છપાએલ છે, એટલે આ પ્રસંગ અત્રે જ સમાપ્ત કર્યું છું. સરસ્વતીની સૌથી પ્રાચીન મૂર્તિ મથુરાના કંકાલીટીલામાંથી મળી આવી છે. ચિત્ર ૯ ‘પ્રભુ શ્રીમહાવીરનું રચ્યવન’—પુપત્તર વિમાનમાંથી વીસ સાગરોપમનું આયુષ્ય પૂર્ણ કરી ઍવ્યા–ચુલીને શ્રી મહાવીર ભગવાન બ્રાહ્મણકુંડગ્રામ નામના નગરમાં કેડાલગેત્રી ઋભિદત્ત
"The right hand figure represents a headless statue of Sarasvati, the goddess of speech and learning, found in 1889 near the first or eastern temple in the mound, which seems to have belonged to the Swetamber sect.
The goddess is shown sitting squatted, with her knees up, on a rectangular pe. destal, holding a manuscript in her left hand. The right hand, which was raised, has been lost. The figure is clothed in very stiffly executed drapery, a small attendant with hair dressed in rolls stands on each side. The attendant on the left wears a tunic and holds a jar - the attendant on the right has his hands clasped in adoration.'
