તેમને આત્માની ઓળખાણ તો હતી જ. મુનિ થયા પછી તેઓ આત્માનું બહું જ ધ્યાન કરવા લાગ્યા. આત્માના ધ્યાનથી તેમના જ્ઞાનની શુદ્ધતા વધવા માંડી અને રાગ તૂટવા માંડયો. એમ કરતા કરતાં બધોય રાગ ટળી ગયો અને પૂરેપૂરું જ્ઞાન ઊઘડી ગયુંએટલે તેઓ ભગવાન થયા, -અરિહંત થયા.

He already had correct knowledge of the Soul. After becoming a Monk he went into deep meditation of the Soul. As a result of his deep meditation of the Soul, his knowledge became purer and his impure emotions started to decrease. In due course he attained complete detachment from impure emotions and also attained complete and supreme knowledge, thus becoming a God - Arihant Bhagwan.
પછી તેમણે ધર્મનો ઉપદેશ આપવા માંડયો. ઉપદેશ સાંભળવા માટે જીવોનાં ટોળે ટોળાં આવ્યા: સ્વર્ગના દેવો આવ્યા, ને મોટા રાજા આવ્યા. આઠ વર્ષનાં બાળકો પણ આવ્યા ને આત્માની સમજણ પામ્યાં. જંગલ માંથી સિંહ આવ્યા, વાઘ આવ્યા, હાથી આવ્યા, વાંદરા આવ્યા, મોટા નાગ આવ્યા ને નાનકડાં દેડકાં પણ આવ્યા, -ને આત્માની સમજણ પામ્યા. He then started preaching the true principles of religion. Huge numbers of Souls gathered to hear him: including heavenly beings and important Kings. Even eight year old children came and gained correct understanding of the Soul. Lions, tigers, elephants, monkeys, big snakes and little frogs came too from the jungle - and correctly understood the Soul.
મહાવીર ભગવાને ઘણા વર્ષ ધર્મનો ઉપદેશ આપીને જનધર્મનો બહુ જ ફેલાવો કર્યો. છેવટે પાવાપુરીમાં તેઓ મોક્ષ પામ્યા. પહેલાં તેઓ અરિહંત હતા, હવે સિદ્ધ થયા. આસો વદ અમાસના પરોઢિયે ભગવાન મોક્ષ પામ્યા, તેથી તે દિવસે દીપાવલિ-મહોત્સવ થાય છે. અત્યારે મહાવીર ભગવાન મોક્ષમાં બિરાજે છે, ત્યાં તેઓ પૂર્ણ આનંદમાં છે.
