It is undoubtedly difficult to say this with certainty, yet there is a mention of the 'Uchchhānagarī' branch in the Sthavirāvalī of the Kalpasūtra. This branch emerged from Arya 'Shāntishreṇika'. Arya Shāntishreṇika is the fourth generation from Arya 'Suhaśti'. The disciples of Arya Suhaśti were Suṣṭhita-Supratibuddha, and their disciple was Indrādiṇa, followed by Indrādiṇa's disciple Dinna, and Shāntishreṇika was the disciple of Dinna. This Arya Shāntishreṇika was a contemporary of Arya Siṅhagirī, the guru of Arya Vajra, thus he belongs to the first generation of Arya Vajra. The time of the heavenly departure of Arya Suhaśti is recorded as Vīrāt 291, and that of the forest as Vīrāt 584. That is, within 293 years from Ajarya Suhaśti’s departure to that of Vajra, five generations can be accounted for. If we generally assume a time span of sixty years for each generation, then the starting time for Shāntishreṇika, being in the fourth generation from Suhaśti, comes to Vīrāt 471. During this time or somewhat before or after, the Uchchhānagarī branch would have emerged from Shāntishreṇika. Assuming that the speaker Umāsvāti belongs to the Uchchhānagarī branch of Shāntishreṇika, and accepting the estimated time of this branch's emergence, it remains difficult to state precisely when Umāsvāti lived after this branch's emergence. This is because the names ascribed to his initiator and teacher in the praise do not match any names found in alternative inscriptions corresponding to the names in the Sthavirāvalī of the Kalpasūtra. Therefore, regarding the time of Umāsvāti, based on the Sthavirāvalī, it can at most be said that he existed around Vīrāt 471, which corresponds to some time at the beginning of Vikrama Samvat, but not before that; further details remain obscure.
2. Amidst this obscurity, there is an unclear ray of light relating to the time of the ancient commentator of the Tattvārthasūtra, which helps delineate the uncertain upper limit of Umāsvāti's time. In the Naya Chakra and its commentary, verses from Tattvārthasūtra and its commentary are cited.
