अनुयोग के महत्त्व को समझाने के लिए टीकाकार हरिभद्रसूरि ने एक दृष्टान्त दिया है। एक ग्वाले के पास सफेद, काली, चितकबरी आदि अनेक रंग की गायें हैं और उनके बछड़े भी हैं। जब जिस गाय का दूध दुहना होता है, तब वह उसी गाय के बछड़े को उसके स्तनों से लगाता है, तो गाय दूध देने लगती है। यदि काली गाय के स्तनों से सफेद गाय का बछड़ा लगा देगा तो गाय दूध नहीं देगी। उसी प्रकार जिस सूत्र का जहाँ जो अर्थ या भाव समझना चाहिए, वहाँ उसी के अनुसार अर्थ का योग करना चाहिए। इसे अनुयोग कहा जाता है। ___ इस अनुयोगद्वारसूत्र का मूल विषय पढ़े हुए श्रुतज्ञान का शिक्षण देने एवं व्याख्या करने
की योग्यता सिखाना है। इसलिए अनुयोगद्वार आगमज्ञान की व्याख्या पद्धति तथा शिक्षा की विधि का प्रतिपादन करने वाला शास्त्र है।
Technical Terms-Uddesh-First step in study of the canon is to seek permission to study scriptures from the teacher. Then the teacher preaches, inspires or gives directions and explains the procedure of reciting. This is called uddesh or consent to study.
Samuddesh-To instruct when to recite Agam or shrutjnana that one has read; to correct the mistakes in text and pronunciation; and to advise to study again and again in order to fix it in memory is called samuddesh.
Anujna—To first memorize and understand the acquired shrut-jnana so that it can be instantaneously recalled; and then to advise and direct others to study the same for their benefit is called anujna.
Anuyoga-To understand the read scriptures with the help of proper meaning of the words; to systematically analyze and elaborate the words and text is called anuyoga (disquisition).
An aphorism is brief or minute like an anu (atom) and meaning is detailed or extensive. One aphorism can have various meanings. To fit (yoga) the right meaning at right place is called anuyoga. The commentator (Vritti) states-to associate (yoga) the intended and prescribed meaning (anu) with the concept of an aphorism is anuyoga. In other words to elaborate an aphorism in consonance with the concept of the writer is anuyoga. अनुयोगद्वार सूत्र
