चतुर अमात्य राजा के मनोगत भावों को बराबर समझ रहा था। उसने राजा से पूछे बिना ही उस स्थान पर एक विशाल तालाब बनवाया और उसके किनारे षड् ऋतुओं के फल-फूल वाले वृक्ष लगवा दिये।
इसके बाद किसी समय पुनः राजा अमात्य सहित उसी रास्ते पर घूमने निकला। वृक्ष-समूह से सुशोभित जलाशय को देखकर राजा ने अमात्य से पूछा-“यह रमणीक जलाशय किसने बनवाया है ?" । ___ अमात्य ने उत्तर दिया-“महाराज ! आपने ही तो बनवाया है।"
अमात्य का उत्तर सुनकर राजा को आश्चर्य हुआ। वह बोला-“सचमुच ही यह जलाशय मैंने बनवाया है ? जलाशय बनवाने का कोई आदेश मैंने दिया हो, याद नहीं है।"
अमात्य ने पूर्व समय की घटना की याद दिलाते हुए बताया-“महाराज ! इस स्थान पर बहुत समय तक मूत्र को बिना सूखा देखकर आपने यहाँ जलाशय बनवाने का विचार किया था। आपके मनोभावों को जानकर मैंने यह जलाशय बनवा दिया है।" ___ अपने अमात्य की दूसरे के मनोभावों को परखने की प्रतिभा देखकर राजा बहुत प्रसन्न हुआ और उसकी प्रशंसा करने लगा। (-मलधारी हेमचन्द्र वृत्ति, पृ. १२५-१२६ मु. जं.)
Elaboration—The stories related to the characters referred to in the aphorism as mentioned in commentaries are as follows: (1) DODINI BRAHMANI
In a village lived a Brahmani named Dodini. She had three daughters. At the time of their marriage the mother thought that 'she should somehow know about the nature of the three sons-in-law and accordingly educate or advise her daughters to enable them to make their married life happy by making the required adjustments in their behaviour.'
With these thoughts she called her three daughters and said—“On the first night when your husband enters the bedroom you should kick him on his head on pretext of some imaginary mistake by him. Next morning come to me and inform about the reaction.”
The daughters agreed and on the said night they all waited for their husbands in their bed-rooms. __When the eldest daughter's husband entered the bed-room, she made an imaginary accusation and kicked him on the head. उपक्रम प्रकरण
