तब उस पुरुष ने बताया कि "देवानुप्रियो ! आप लोगो ने लकडी काटने के लिए वन मे जाते समय मुझसे कहा था- देवानुप्रिय ! हम लोग लकडी लाने जगल में जाते हैं, तुम भोजन बनाकर रखना। कुछ समय बाद मैंने विचार किया कि आप लोगों के लिए भोजन बना लूँ, ऐसा विचार कर जहाँ अँगीठी थी, वहाँ आया । मैने अच्छी तरह सभी ओर से उस को देखा, किन्तु कहीं भी मुझे आग दिखाई नहीं दी । (तब मैंने कुल्हाड़ी लेकर उस काष्ठ के दो टुकड़े कर दिये और उन्हें भी इधर-उधर से अच्छी तरह देखा । परन्तु वहाँ भी मुझे आग दिखाई नही दी। इसके बाद मैंने उसके तीन, चार यावत् अनेक टुकडे किये । उनको भी अच्छी तरह देखा, परन्तु उनमे भी कहीं आग दिखाई नहीं दी । तब थककर, खिन्न और दुःखित होकर कुल्हाडी को एक ओर रखकर विचार किया कि मैं आप लोगों के लिए भोजन नहीं बना सका।) इस विचार से मैं अत्यन्त निराश, दुःखी हो शोक और चिन्तारूपी समुद्र में डूबकर हथेली पर मुँह को टिकाये आर्त्तध्यान कर रहा हूँ ।"
(d) After cutting the wood, his companions came to the place where they had left him and finding him dejected, sad and morose asked—“O the blessed ! Why are you feeling dejected, sad and morose ?"
Then that person replied "O the blessed! While going to the forest for cutting wood, you had told me that you were going to the jungle for bringing wood and that I should prepare food. After some time I thought of preparing food for you; so I came to the fire-vessel. I saw the wooden stick carefully from all sides, but I did not notice fire anywhere. (Then I cut the piece into two, saw the pieces carefully, but could not find fire. Later I cut it into three, four and many pieces. I examined the pieces carefully but I did not notice fire anywhere. Then feeling dejected, I kept the axe aside and thought that I could not prepare food for you.) Due to these thoughts, I am feeling extremely dejected, sad and morose and so having my hand-palm on my face, I am in a deep shock."
(ङ) तए णं तेसिं पुरिसाणं एगे पुरिसे छेए, दक्खे, पत्तट्ठे जाव उवए, सलद्धे, ते पुरिसे एवं वयासी - गच्छह णं तुज्झे देवाणुप्पिया ! ण्हाया कयबलिकम्मा जा हव्वमागच्छेह, जा णं अहं असणं साहेमि त्ति कट्टु परियरं बंधइ, परसुं गिण्हइ सरं करेइ, सरेण अरणिं महेइ जोइं पाडे । जोई संधुक्खेइ, तेसिं पुरिसाणं असणं साहेइ ।
