citizens came and commenced his worship. 5 सूत्र ४८ : तेणं कालेणं तेणं समएणं सुंभा देवी बलिचंचाए रायहाणीए सुंभवडेंसए भवणे डा र सुंभंसि सीहासणंसि विहरइ। कालीगमएणं जाव नट्टविहिं उवदंसेत्ता पडिगया।
सूत्र ४८ : काल के उस भाग में शुंभा नामक देवी बलिचंचा नाम की राजधानी में शुभावतंसक ड र भवन में शुंभ नामक सिंहासन पर आसीन थी। शेष वर्णन काली देवी के समान। वह भगवान के र निकट नृत्यादि का प्रदर्शन कर लौट गई।
48. During that period of time the goddess named Shumbha was sitting on a throne named Shumbh in the Viman named Shumbhavatansak in the capital city named Balichancha. All other details are the same as in the case of goddess Kali. Goddess Shumbha appeared before Shraman Bhagavan Mahavir, performed dances, etc. and returned.
सूत्र ४९ : पुव्वभवपुच्छा। सावत्थी नयरी, कोट्ठए चेइए, जियसत्तू राया, सुंभे गाहावई, र सुंभसिरी भारिया, सुंभा दारिया, सेसं जहा कालीए। णवरं-अद्भुट्ठाइं पलिओवमाइं ठिई।
एवं खलु निक्खेवओ अज्झयणस्स।
सूत्र ४९ : गौतम स्वामी के उसके पूर्व-भव के विषय में प्रश्न करने पर भगवान ने बतायार श्रावस्ती नाम की नगरी में कोष्ठक नामक चैत्य था। वहाँ जितशत्रु नामक राजा था। शुंभ नामक
गाथापति वहाँ रहता था। उसकी पत्नी का नाम शुभश्री था तथा कन्या का नाम शुभा। शेष समस्त से वृत्तान्त काली देवी के समान है। विशेष यह है कि शुंभा देवी की आयु साढ़े तीन पल्योपम की है।
जम्बू ! प्रथम अध्ययन का यही अर्थ है।

ha. The rest of the details are exactly as those of goddess Kali, the only 15 difference being that the life-span of goddess Shumbha is three Palyopam. Jambu! This is the meaning of the first chapter.
