प्राणि-रक्षा के निमित्त प्राण त्याग चित्र : १९
१. गुरु आज्ञा पाकर धर्मरुचि अणगार नगर के बाहर स्थण्डिल भूमि पर पहुंचे। वहाँ एकान्त जीवरहित निर्दोष स्थान देखकर उस घी मसालेदार भोजन की एक बूंद मिट्टी पर डाली। उसकी तेज गंध से हजारों चींटियाँ वहाँ आ गईं। जैसे ही चींटियों ने वह बूंद चखी कि वे वहीं मर गईं।
चींटियों को मरा देखकर मुनि सोचने लगते हैं-"जब एक बूंद से ही हजारों चीटियाँ मर गईं तो यदि यह पूरा साग यहाँ डाल दूंगा तो न जाने कितने जीवों/सत्त्वों का विनाश होगा....?" प्राणि-रक्षा की अनुकम्पा भावना से मुनि का हृदय द्रवित हो उठा और पूरा साग अपने उदर में डाल लिया।
२. उसका विषैला प्रभाव शरीर पर हुआ। असह्य वेदना उठी। अन्त में अरिहंत भगवान को नमस्कार करते हुए समाधि भाव के साथ शरीर त्यागा।

1. After getting instructions from his guru, ascetic Dharmaruchi went out of the town and selected a suitable spot. He then poured just a drop of the curry and watched. Drawn by the strong smell thousands of ants swarmed in. Whichever ant consumed that curry died on the spot.
When the ascetic saw all this he thought, “When just a drop of this curry causes the death of thousands of ants, if I throw away all this curry on the ground it would kill an infinite number of living beings and life forms." The compassionate ascetic was deeply moved.
2. The compassionate ascetic gulped all the curry. The toxic effect of the curry spread throughout his body. He started suffering intolerable agony. He paid homage to Arhats and Bhagavans and embraced the meditative death.
