१. राजा कनकरथ के मन में राज्य सत्ता के प्रति अत्यधिक आसक्ति थी। इस कारण वह पुत्र के जन्म लेते ही छुरी आदि से अंगुली काटकर उसे विकलांग कर डालता। रानी पद्मावती अपने सामने जन्म लेते ही पुत्रों को यों विकलांग किया जाता देखकर विलख-विलख कर रोने लग जाती।
एक बार पद्मावती ने मंत्री तेतलीपुत्र को अपनी व्यथा बताई। और इस बार की सन्तान की रक्षा करने का वचन लिया।
२. जब रानी ने पुत्र को जन्म दिया उसी समय पोट्टिला ने एक मृत कन्या को जन्म दिया। मंत्री जन्म लेते शिशु को छुपाकर अपने घर ले जाता है। और पोट्टिला की मृत कन्या को लाकर रानी के पास सुला देता है। (चौदहवाँ अध्ययन)

1. King Kanak-rath was so possessive of his kingdom and wealth that he used to mutilate his sons as soon as they were born so that none of them could claim his throne, Queen Padmavati cried and became sad seeing this dastardly act again and again. But the avaricious king did not change his attitude.
The queen expressed her feelings to minister Tetaliputra and made him promise to somehow save his next son from being mutilated.
2. After some time, by chance the queen and the minister's wife gave birth at the same time. The queen gave birth to a son and the minister's wife to a dead girl. As per the plan the minister secretly exchanged the king's son with his dead daughter. He took the prince under his care and thus saved the heir to the throne.
