किसी समय ग्रीष्म ऋतु में विंध्यगिरि के वनों में भीषण अग्नि-प्रकोप हुआ। जंगल के जीव दौड़-दौड़कर मेरुप्रभ हाथी के सुरक्षित मण्डल में आकर आश्रय लेने लगे। योजन भर का वह मण्डल जंगल के जीवों से खचाखच भर गया। अचानक मेरुप्रभ हाथी ने शरीर खुजलाने के लिए अपना पाँव ऊपर उठाया। स्थान खाली होते ही वहाँ एक नन्हा-सा खरगोश आकर दुबक गया। हाथी वापस पैर रखने लगा तो उसने पैर के नीचे खरगोश को बैठा देखा, हाथी के मन में अनुकम्पा भाव उमड़ आया। खरगोश की प्राण-रक्षा के लिए उसने अढाई दिन-रात तक अपना एक पैर ऊपर अधर में उठाये रखा, वह तीन पैर पर ही खड़ा रहा।

During the summer once again a terrible forest fire started. To save itself the red elephant rushed towards the arena that it had cleared. In that arena numerous animals had already taken refuge. After some time it lifted one of its legs to scratch some itching part of its body. At that instant a small rabbit crept in and occupied that space. When the elephant wanted to put back its leg on the ground it found that a tiny rabbit was occupying that space. Overwhelmed with compassion, it did not put its feet back on the ground and kept it raised. Meruprabh elephant remained standing on three legs for two and a half days.
