SIXTEEN TYPES OF SPEECH AND PROPER LANGUAGE ____181. Disciplined ascetics exercising control over their speech should use speech with prudence and discipline. The sixteen types of speech are—(1) singular, (2) dual, (3) plural, (4) feminine gender, (5) masculine gender, (6) neuter gender, (7) spiritual words, (8) words of praise, (9) words of criticism, (10) words of praise with criticism, (11) words of criticism with praise, (12) past tense, (13) present tense, (14) future tense, (15) direct speech (first person), and (16) indirect speech (second and third person).
When it is required to utter singular he should utter singular only. In the same way he should also do for all the said types of speech up to indirect speech. Also before uttering that this is a woman, man or eunuch, or that particular thing or person or other; he should deliberate and ensure and then only speak in disciplined language avoiding related faults.
विवेचन-साधु जिस किसी प्रकार का कथन करना चाहता हो, पहले उस विषय में अच्छी प्रकार छानबीन कर ले कि मैं जिस वचन का प्रयोग करना चाहता हूँ, वह वास्तव में यथार्थ है या नहीं? दूसरी बात, उसे भाषा शास्त्र, व्याकरण आदि का भलीभाँति बोध होना चाहिए ताकि अपने भावों को स्पष्ट और शुद्ध रूप में अभिव्यक्त कर सके।
इस सूत्र में बताये हुए ८ प्रकार के वचन निषिद्ध हैं-(१) अस्पष्ट वचन, (२) संदिग्ध वचन, (३) केवल अनुमान पर आधारित वचन, (४) केवल सुनी-सुनाई बात के आधार पर, (५) प्रत्यक्ष देखी हुई परन्तु छानबीन न की हुई सन्देहयुक्त बात, (६) स्पष्ट हो परन्तु प्राणघातक, मर्मस्पर्शी, आधात जनक हो तो वह भी न बोले, (७) द्वयर्थक वचन (दोहरे अर्थ वाली बात), तथा (८) अपेक्षारहित तथा एकान्त कथन। अध्यात्म वचन की व्याख्या करते हुए आचार्य श्री आत्माराम जी म. ने लिखा है-जो वचन बोलने का विचार हो, परन्तु उसको छिपाने के लिए अन्य वचन बोलने का विचार करके बोलते हुए अकस्मात् मुख से वही वचन निकल जाना अध्यात्म वचन है। जैसे-कोई व्यापारी रुई खरीदने के लिए दूसरे गाँव में गया और निश्चय किया कि मैं किसी के सामने रुई का नाम नहीं लूँगा परन्तु जब उसे प्यास लगी तो कुएँ पर जाकर पानी पिलाने वाले को कहा-"मुझे जल्दी रुई पिलाओ, अर्थात् हृदय में छिपी बात मुँह पर अकस्मात् आ गई। इसे अध्यात्म वचन कहा जाता है। (विवेचन, पृ. ११४४)
