138. If it is necessary to board a boat he should be inclined to use a boat going across. He should first seek permission from the householder and retire to a lonely place inspect his equipment and pack them together. After this he should inspect his own body from head to toe and take a vow of limited fasting. Then he should carefully board the boat keeping one foot in water and the other on land.
१३९. से भिक्खू वा २ नावं दुरूहमाणे णो नावाओ पुरआ दुरूहेज्जा, णो नावाओ मग्गओ दुरूहेज्जा, णो नावाओ मज्झओ दुरूहेज्जा, णो बाहाओ पगिज्झिय २ अंगुलिया उद्दिसिय २ ओणमिय २ उण्णमिय २ णिज्झाएज्जा ।
१३९. साधु-साध्वी नौका पर चढ़ते हुए न तो नौका के अगले भाग में बैठे, न पिछले भाग में बैठे और न ही मध्य भाग में नौका के बाजुओं को पकड़-पकड़कर या अँगुली द्वारा बता-बताकर या उसे ऊँची या नीची करके जल को नहीं देखे |
139. While boarding a boat a bhikshu or bhikshuni should choose neither the stern nor the prow or the middle of the boat. He should refrain from looking down at the water by holding the sides of the boat or raising, lowering or pointing with fingers.
१४०. से णं परो नावागओ नावागयं वएज्जा आउसंतो समणा ! एवं ता तुमं नाव उक्कसाहि वा वोक्कसाहि वा खिवाहि वा रज्जूए वा गहाय आकसाहि । णो से तं परिण्णं परिजाणेज्जा, तुसिणीओ उवेहेज्जा ।
१४०. नौका में आरूढ़ साधु से यदि नाविक कहे कि "आयुष्मन् श्रमण ! तुम इस नौका को ऊपर की ओर खींचो, नौका को नीचे की ओर खींचो या रस्सी को पकड़कर नौका को अच्छी तरह से बाँध दो अथवा रस्सी से इसे जोर से कस दो।" नाविक के द्वारा कहे गये इन वचनों को साधु स्वीकार न करे, किन्तु मौन धारण कर बैठा रहे ।
140. If the boatman tells to an ascetic riding the boat-"Long lived Shraman! Please pull the boat upwards or downwards or hold the rope and tie the boat fast or draw the rope tight." The ascetic should not comply with this request from the boatman and silently ignore it.
