The corresponding figures in the 2001 census were: Maharashtra 1,301,843, Rajasthan 650,491, and Gujarat 525,305. Meanwhile in the 2001 census Madhya Pradesh with 545,446 Jains emerged as the state supporting the third largest Jain population after Maharashtra and Rajasthan. These four States, together with Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi accounted for about 90% of the total Jain population in India in 2001. The varying pace of population growth can be attributed mainly to inter-state migration, ethnic revivalism and natural increase.
