________________ FIVE KINDS OF KNOWLEDGE. The Jaina have a classification of knowledge on which they lay great stress, and which is believed io be peculiar to themselves. They divide it into five classes. (1) Mati Jhānu Hla Ellat), which depends on making the right use of intellect and conscience. (2) Sruta Jñāna (34181101), or knowledge attained by hearing, preaching and the reading of S'āstra, &c. This knowledge is intimately connected with knowledge of the previous class. 3) Avuulhi Jrīna 249 la tla. Limited knowledge of things beyond the ken of ordinary men, for instance knowledge concerning the heavens, gods, the actions of friends at a distance, &c. (4) Janah paryāya Jñāna 34:4414 014). Knowledge of what passes in the minds of others. (5) Kevala Jūānu ($947 14). The perfect knowledge or omniscience possessed by the Kevali.
