________________ Technical Note 27 ii) In the case of contemporary sādhvis and äryikās we follow the usage of each community the firs time that a sādhvi is mentioned, for example: Sadhvi Hemaprabhā Śri of the Mūrtipūjakas Sãdhvi Śri Rājimati of the Terāpanthis Mahāsati Sri Tarulată of the Sthānakavāsis Āryikā Sri Jñānamati of the Digambaras. 4 Thereafter we give simply the title followed by the name: Sādhvi Hemaprabhā etc. and, according to custom, Jñānamati Mātāji or Mātāji. iii) In the inscriptions of Karņāțaka.5 the terms used to describe women ascetics are: avve, ganti, gantiya, kanti, kantiyar As in the case of sādhvi and äryik, these words are not printed in italics (cf. § 2). These also are titles preceded by the personal name. iv) In the texts and inscriptions of Tamil Nāļu 6 the terms are: ațigal, kurati ațigal, kurattiyār These too are titles and are preceded by the proper name of the person or of the place to which she belongs. 5. References in the notes to translations and contemporary work in Hindi i) Authors: Ācārya, Muni, Sadhvi, Āryikā At the first mention we give the title, e.g. Sādhvi Samghamitrā; thereafter in all other reference we give only the name: Samghamitrā, etc. 4 The titles are Sadhvi, Mahāsati or Āryikā in accordance with each community's custom and the Sri is placed either before or after the personal name. 5 Cf.
