TRADITIONAL HISTORY OF KALINGA
91
Utkala kingdom). Utkala is further called a kingdom of Madhyadeśa noted for vāmana elephants. Its people were called the Utkalas. It is also called a Vindhyan tribe. The Tosalas are also called a Vindhyan tribe.
The two rivers Lānguliya and Vamśadhārā are mentioned among the rivers rising from the Mahendra mountain in the Matsya and the Vāyu Purāņas. The verses occur almost in an identical form in both the Purāņas :-“Tribhāgā, ķishikulyā, Ikshudā, Tridivā, Lāngūlini and Vamśadhārā are daughters of the Mahendra."6 The Matsya adds Tāmraparņi, Mūli, Śaravā and Vimalā to these.? As the Lânguliya and Vaṁsadhārā are omitted here, the text of the Vāyu Purāņa appears to be more correct.
In the chapter entitled 'Bhuvan-kośa-varṇanam' of both the Purāņas, the Kalingas are mentioned with the Setukas, the Mūshikas, the Kumanas, the Vanavāsikas, the Mahārāshțras and the Māhishakas. A few lines later,
