competent author could be gandhahastin Yaśovijayajī was misled. into committing the mistake of applying the adjective gandhahastin to Divākara—that is quite possible.
The above arguments clearly enable us to see that the person famous as gandhahastin in the Svetāmbara sect is none but Siddhasena, the author of the presently available voluminous commentary on Tattvārthabhāsya. Thus we are provided with definite reasons to maintain that when Abhayadeva, the commentator of Sanmati, who had flourished in the 9th-10th centuries, in the course of his commentaryl twice refers to gandhahastin and recommends a perusal of his commentary on Tattvārtha, he is referring to none but the author of the presently available commentary on the bhāsya. So in search for the commentary by gandhahastin on Tattvārtha recommended by Abhayadeva in his commentary on Sanmati we need not now cast a glance at the perished or unavailable literature. This very investigation also makes in necessary to maintain that the vivarana by gandhahastin referred to by śīlāńka?—of the 9th
1. At the end of his commentary on the 1st gāthā of the Kanda two of Sanmati Abhayadeva quotes the aphorisms 9 to 12 of the chapter one of Tattvārtha and while recommending gandhahastin for a commentary on the same says:
"asya ca sūtrasamūhasya vyakhyā gandhahastiprabhrtibhir vihiteti no pradarsyate" p. 595, line 24.
Similarly, while explaining the term 'hetuvāda' occurring in the gāthā 44 of the Kānda three he. quotes
"samyagdarśanajñānacāritrāņi mokşa-mārgah” and about it too says:
"tathā gandhahastiprabhrtibhir vikrāntam iti neha pradarśyate vistarabhayāt" p. 657.
