LORD MAHAVIR (599BC - 527 BC)
He is the ford founder and today's Jainism is based on his preachings. He founded the religious order of monks, nuns, lay-men and lay-women. Lord Mahavir was born in a princely family but he left his palace at the age of 30 in search of eternal truth and eternal happiness. He attained kevalGyan (ultimate knowledge and wisdom) when he was 42 and Nirvana (died) when he was 72. He was older than Buddha though both were born in North India and preaching their own philosophies at the same time. Mahavir and Buddha both preached the principles of Ahimsa. Mahavir took the path of strict penance whereas Buddha took the "middle path".
મહાવીર સ્વામી તે ૨૪ મા તીર્થકર.
આજના જૈન ધર્મનું મૂળ સ્વરૂપ તેમણે ઘડયું. તેમને જન્મ ઈ.સ. પૂર્વે ૫૯૯ માં બિહાર રાજ્યમાં વૈશાલી નગરનાં પર (શ્રત્રિયકુંડ) માં થયો હતો. તેમના પિતા રાજા સિદ્ધાર્થ; માતાનું નામ ત્રિશલા. ૩૦ વર્ષની વયે ગૃહત્યાગ કર્યો. તપ-સાધના કરી. અહિં સા અને સંયમના માર્ગે ચાલીને, અનેક પરિષહ સહન કરીને તેમણે વિશ્વને નવા જ પ્રકાશ આપે. અહિં સા-મૂલક ક્રાંતિ અને અહિં સા યુકત સમાજ રચનાનો પાયો નાખ્યો. ૪૨ વર્ષની વયે તેમને કેવળજ્ઞાન થયું. ૭૨ વર્ષની વયે તેઓ નિર્વાણ પામ્યાં, તેઓ બુદ્ધ ભગવાનથી મોટી ઉંમરનાં હતાં પરંતુ તેમના સમકાલીન હતાં. મહાવીર અને બુદ્ધ બંનેએ અહિં સા-ધર્મને ઉપદેશ આપ્યો. મહાવીર સ્વામીએ કઠિન તપશ્ચર્યાની આવશ્યકતા પર ભાર મૂક્યો જ્યારે ભગવાન બુદ્ધ આ માર્ગ છેડીને “મધ્યમ-માર્ગ અપનાવ્યું.
મહાવીર સ્વામીએ બિહાર-ઉત્તરપ્રદેશ અને બંગાળાના વિસ્તારમાં ધર્મ પ્રચાર કર્યો. તેમનું નિર્વાણ પાવાપુરમાં થયું હતું. નિર્વાણ સમય ઈ.સ. પૂર્વે ૫૨૭. દિપાવલીને દિન.
