The first Tirthankar (prophet, path-maker ) is Rushabhdev. He taught all the necessary knowledge regarding farming, house-building, cooking and basic education in arts, science and commerce. His symbo1 is the bull. Some coins of pre-Aryan civilisation show the bull on one side and an ascetic on the other. According to some historians Jain philosophy existed in India before the arrival of Aryan people.
Two distinct 1ines of thought prevailed during that time. One was the Vedic culture and the other was the Shraman culture. The first one gave Hinduism to the world and the other culture gave Jainism and Buddhism.

The 22nd Tirthankar Neminath, a cousin of Lord Krishna, was a kind hearted prince. The 23rd Tirthankar, Lord Parsvanath, was born more than 2750 years ago. He preached the religion of four principles (non-violence, truth, non-stealing and non-acquisition).

તીર્થકર એટલે તીર્થની સ્થાપના કરનાર. તીર્થ એટલે સાધુ, સાધ્વી, શ્રાવક શ્રાવિકાના ચતુવિધ સંઘ.તીર્થકરધર્મપદેશ કરે છે. ધર્મ ચક્ર પ્રવર્તન કરે છે. આ સમયમાં ૨૪ તીર્થંકર થયાં છે. પ્રથમ તીર્થકર ઋષભદેવ હતાં. તે આદિનાથ તરીકે પણ ઓળખાય છે. તેમણે માનવીઓને સર્વ વિદ્યા શીખવી અને પ્રાથમિક જ્ઞાન તથા કેળવણી પણ આપ્યાં. ખેતી કરતાં, અગ્નિનો ઉપયોગ કરતાં તેમણે શીખવ્યું . તેમનુ નિશાન બળદ છે. (ઋષભ એટલે બળદ). સિંધુ ખીણની સંસ્કૃતિના અવશેષા, ખાસ કરીને પ્રાચીન સિક્કા પરનાં બળદનાં તથા કેટલાક કાઉસગ્ગ ધ્યાનમાં સ્થિત યોગીના ચિન્હો પરથી હવે એક માન્યતા એ પણ બંધાઈ છે કે જૈન-ધર્મ આર્યાના આગમન પહેલાંથી જ ભારતમાં પ્રચલિત હતા.

વણકર કામ
પ્રા ને વિવિધકળાઓ શીખવે, સંસ્કૃતિએ જ્ગતને જૈન ધર્મ તથા ઐાદ્ધ ધર્મ આપ્યાં.
બાવીસમાં તીર્થકર, નેમિનાથ; કૃષ્ણ ભગવાનનાં પિતરાઈ ભાઈ હતાં. ત્રેવીસમાં તીર્થંકર પાર્શ્વનાથ તો ઐતિહાસિક પ્રત્તિમા છે. તે ૨૭૫૦ કરતાં યે વધારે વર્ષો પહેલાં જનમ્યાં હતાં. તેમણે ચાતુર્યામ ધર્મના ઉપદેશ આપ્યો હતો. આ ચાર સિદ્ધાંતો આ પ્રમાણે છે.
