________________ THE SCIENCE OF THOUGHT. The following four stages darsana (pure sensing) and the jñâna (knowledge). 1. Avagrha which means the singling out of an object with reference to its class only, that is the knowledge of its general properties, e.g., to know an object as a man. 2. Ihâ, or the attitude of enquiry leading to the ascertainment of truth about the object of avagrha, for instance, to enquire whether the object known to be a man be a Londoner. Thâ must be distinguished from doubt which is not a form of jñana. 3. Avâya, i.e., the ascertainment of truth in respect of the subject of enquiry, as for instance, the determination or knowledge that the man about whom it was asked, whether he was a Londoner or not, was in fact a Londoner. 4. Dharanâ, that is being impressed with the idea thus formed, so as to be able to recall it subsequently. Jain Education International 33 Occur between acquisition of CHAPTER XVIII.
