as it is a powerful means of intensifying faith, and fasting and general piety call for no special mention here. They all were intended to uproot the poisonous tree of desire which is the root of all trouble; and there have been many notable Muslim saints who understood these injunctions in this sense. Here are a few notable verses from the writings of Shamsh of Tabrez and Farid-ul-dio Attar in support of this view :
(۱) زدنیا ترک کیر از بهر دین تو توکل بر خدا کن بالیقین تو
(۲) قلم اندر بصورت خویش در زن حصار نفس را از بین برکن
(۳) حواس خمسه را چون دزد بریند جو بستی دزد ایمن باش میخند
(۳) چو باید رفتنت زین دار دنها چرابندی تو دل درکار دنیا
(5) بغفلتهاے دنیا خلق مغرور بکرده یاد مرگ از دل همه دور
(1) علایقہاے دنیا قطع گردان حزیں دل باش در وے چون غریبان
(۷) زھے غفلت که مارا کور کرد است که یاد مرگ از دل دور کرد است
(۸) تا نه گردد نفس تابع روح را کے دوا یابی دل مجروح را
