________________
fundamentals, described herein, are the very foundation stones on which the entire edifice of Jaina philosophy has been erected. Their proper understanding and belief in their existence and truth is vital to the spiritual progress of an aspirant. Vācaka Umāsvāti in his Tattvārthasūtra, has clearly stated that right-vision is nothing but a firm belief in the existence and truth of these fundamentals. Also, right-vision being the first and the vital part of the path to spiritual emancipation, it follows that without a firm belief in the existence and the truth of these fundamentals the liberation may only be a distant dream.
The fundamentals are thus firmly linked with the concept of right-vision or right-belief or right--faith or right-view or right-inclination or right-attitude or right way of thinking. This, then, forms the subject of our next chapter.
