There was much excitement, and confusion too, as all of us rushed into the kitchen. All the friends who wanted to help feed Guruji ran around carrying hot rotis and other food to him. And he presided at the table and lovingly allowed us to feed him and pamper him to our hearts content.
When it was time to leave, we escorted him to the front door and I started to lead him to my car to drive him to my friend's house. To my embarrassment and horror I found that a big water tanker had chosen that very time to come and it had reversed into our drive and was blocking both our cars. Worse, it was not possible to remove it right away. So my friend Roli's husband , whose car was parked outside the main wooden arched gate, (just opposite the rangoli), said that he would take Guruji in his car.
And now comes the most amazing part, which all of us who were standing around Guruji that day, saw with our own eyes.
As he now had to exit through the front gate, Guruji proceeded to walk straight through the rangoli. I thought to myself. “ Oh what a shame, the rangoli will get spoilt- but it doesn't matter- it has done its job of welcoming Guruji.” My husband also had the same thought and looked closely at his feet as he walked through. Guruji was wearing the white cloth shoes that he normally wears, and he has a kind of shuffling gait. He shuffled through the rangoli, which was made of loose powder, and nothing happened to it!
I realized this only later when we came back after seeing him off at the gate.
