ignorant existence I was driven by desire. Being enlightened now, to be motivated by desire is irrational for me. Ignorant beings keep orbiting in the four phases of mundane existence.
I resolve to attain enlightenment and renounce all woe. I will stay ever and anon on the pedestal of equanimity, blissful and unmoved and be delivered of all possible woes.
अण्णाणं परमं दुक्खं, अण्णाणा जायते भयं।
अण्णाणमूलो संसारो, विविहो सव्वदेहिणं।।1।। 1. अज्ञान ही परम दुःख है। अज्ञान से ही भय उत्पन्न होते हैं। समस्त शरीरधारियों के लिए संसार-परम्परा का मूल भी अज्ञान ही है।
___ 1. The severest woe is ignorance. Ignorance feeds apprehension. It is the root cause of reincarnations.
मिगा बज्झन्ति पासेहिं, विहंगा मत्तवारणा।
मच्छा गलेहि सासन्ति, अण्णाणं सुमहब्भयं।।2।। 2. अज्ञान के कारण ही हरिण, पक्षी और हाथी पाश से बन्धते हैं। मत्स्यों के कण्ठ बींधे जाते हैं। अज्ञान ही संसार का सबसे बड़ा भय है।
2. Ignorance leads deers, birds and elephants to bondage and fish to death. There is no graver sin than ignorance
जम्मं जरा य मच्च् य, सोगो माणोऽवमाणणा।
अण्णाणमूलं जीवाणं, संसारस्स य संतती।।3।। 3. अज्ञान से ही जीव जन्म, बुढ़ापा, मृत्यु, शोक और मानापमान प्राप्त करते हैं। जीवों की भव-परम्परा भी अज्ञानमूलक है।
3. It is ignorance that blights individuals with birth, age, death, grief and honour-humiliations. Reincarnation is the direct outcome of ignorance.
अण्णाणेण अहं पुव्वं, दीहं संसारसागरं।
जम्मजोणिभयावत्तं, सरन्तो दुक्खजालकं।।4।। 4. अज्ञान के कारण ही मैंने पहले जन्म (योनि) जनित भय चक्र के विस्तृत दुःखजाल में फँसकर दीर्घकाल तक संसारसागर में परिभ्रमण किया है।
4. It was my ignorance to which I owe my previous reincarnations, fraught with anguish and agony of all sorts, lasting to aeons in the fathomless gulf of existence. 318 इसिभासियाई सुत्ताई
