કદી આની શંકા નહિ જાય. તે તળીયા તરફ આકર્ષાયો વિગેરે અનુભવો જ તેને થશે. તે કોઈ ભૌતિકશાસ્ત્રી હશે તો પણ તે આમાં અટકળો કરશે પણ સાચું નક્કી નહિ કરી શકે.”
ગુરુત્વાકર્ષણના પ્રસાર માટે માનેલું ‘ઈથર' બિનભૌતિક હોવાની માન્યતા ‘ધર્મદ્રવ્ય’ની માન્યતા તરફ લઈ જનારી છે ઃ

The Newtonian ether is rigid yet allows all matter to move about it without friction or resistance. It is elastic but cannot be distorted. It moves but its motion cannot be detected. It exerts force on matter but matter exerts no force on it. It has no mass nor has it any parts which can be identified. It is said to be at rest relatively to the fixed stars' yet the stars are known to be in motion relatively to one another (j ઇથર સખત છે, તો પણ કોઈપણ પદાર્થને ઘર્ષણ કે અવરોધ વિના ગતિ કરવા દે છે. તે સ્થિતિસ્થાપક છે પણ વિકૃત થતું નથી. તે ગતિ કરે છે પણ તેની ગતિ નોંધી શકાતી નથી. તે પદાર્થ પર બળનો પ્રયત્ન કરે છે, પણ પદાર્થ તેના પર બળ કરતું નથી. ન તેને વજન છે, ન તેના કોઈ અંગો ઓળખી શકાયા છે. સ્થિર તારાઓની અપેક્ષાએ તે સ્થિર કહેવાય છે, જો કે તારાઓ એકબીજાની અપેક્ષાએ ગતિમાં હોવાનું કહેવાય છે.) Expriment and the therory of relativity showed that the ether must be something very different from ordinary terrestrial substance.” (૧૦૦ વર્ષો પહેલાં ‘ઇથર’ એક જેલી (સરેશ) જેવો સ્થિતિસ્થાપક પદાર્થ પદાર્થ ગણાતો હતો, પરંતુ તે જેલી કરતાં પણ વધુ સખત અને હલકો, જેથી તે એકદમ ઝડપથી કંપન કરી શકે. પરંતુ માઇકલસનના પ્રયોગો અને સાપેક્ષવાદના સિદ્ધાંતોની ઉચ્ચકક્ષાની ઘણી મોટી ઘટનાઓ એ બતાવ્યું કે ‘ઇથર’ પાર્થિવ પદાર્થો કરતાં કંઈક અત્યંત જુદું હોવું જોઈએ.)
