________________ what they are and not other? Why should the formula for the force of attraction between two bodies be the m1m2 m1m2 Newtonian F= and not, say, 12 13 Why should the 'specific gravity' of kerosene, for example, be only .8 and not, let us say, .7 or .9. Instances might be multiplied almost end-.. lessly not only from the exact sciences but also from thremmatology, psychology, palaeontology, from any walk of life. In short, as has already been said, why should Nature behave, or seem to behave, precisely as she does and not in some other way? Why should she obey only one particular set of scientific and mathematical laws to the exclusion of the infinitude of other such sets? The matter, the mystery in us all by which we see, hear, feel etc. is not half so easy to answer unopposably as the ready omniscience of the uninformed might think, seeking shelter behind the magic word 'Nature' easy for us all to utter. The objection here that the "specific gravity" of kerosene is only .8 and not .7 or 9, that the laws of light, liquids, etc. are what they are and not other, and so on, in short, that Nature (or the universe) obeys only one particular set of scientific and mathematical laws, is itself Jain Education International Nature': we need not go behind her for its cause' cannot hold; for it is begging the question. It will resemble one's offering for a tough equation in x the grand solution X = X. Samkara will therefore perceive, after refuting the Samkhya philosophy whose PRAKRTI is roughtly equal to our Nature', a stupendous, immeasurable intelligence behind Nature', sometimes called The Cosmic Mind' in philosophy, which it calls 'God' (Isvar), who imposes on the universe one particular set of scientific and mathematical laws, eliminating the others whose number is infinite and vigilantly sees to it that they are rigorously observed by the universe, or Nature' if one will. But for His, this climination and vigilant supervision matter and mind should behave differently at different times. The sky should now appear blue, now red, now yellow, and so on; liquids should now keep a level surface, now an uneven one, now a corrugated one, and so following; sugar, should now taste sweet, now sour, now astringent, and so forth,. There should thus be chaos and not cosmos in the universe. In other words, 'God' (Isvara) is, philosophi cally a Limit' in the universe, a, principle of Limit behind the universe,' If one will prefer to have it For Personal & Private Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
