બીજે દિવસે રવિવાર હોવાથી અમારે કશું અગત્યનું કામ નહોતું તેથી અમે શહેર જોવા નીકળ્યા.
અમેરિકાના યુનાઈટેડ સ્ટેટસનું પાયતખ્ત શહેર વોશીંગ્ટન છે, તો વસ્તી, ઉદ્યોગ, સાહસ, હુન્નર તથા સુધારાની બાબતમાં ન્યુયોર્ક આ દેશમાં પ્રથમ દરજ્જો ધરાવે છે. આ શહેરનો વિસ્તાર ૪૨ ચોરસ માઈલ છે અને વસ્તી સમારે સત્તર લાખ છે. દુનિયાના દરેક ભાગના લોકો અહીં વસે છે. આયલેન્ડના ડબલીન શહેરમાં જેટલા આઈરીશ લોકો રહે છે તેના કરતા વધારે આઈરીશ લોકો ન્યુયોર્કમાં રહે છે. બરલીન સિવાય જર્મની દેશના કોઈ પણ શહેરમાં જેટલા જર્મન લોકો રહે છે તેના કરતાં વધારે જર્મન લોકો ન્યુયોર્ક શહેરમાં વસે છે. યુનાઈટેડ સ્ટેટસ આખું રાજ્ય પ્રજાસત્તાક હોવાથી મોટા અમલદારો લોકોની ચૂંટણીથી નિમાય છે. ન્યુયોર્કનો મ્યુનિસિપલ કારોબાર બત્રીસ મેમ્બરો ચલાવે છે. એ મેમ્બરોને લોકો ચૂંટે છે. શહેરની વાર્ષિક આવક સુમારે કરોડ રૂપિયા છે. આ ન્યુયોર્ક શહેરમાં ૨૬૦૦૦ કારખાના છે. તેમાં સાડા ત્રણ લાખ લોકોને રોજી મળે છે. તેઓ દર વરસે ૨૩૦૦૦૦૦૦૦૦ રૂપિયાનો સામાન બનાવે છે. આ શહેરમાં ૪૩ પ્રસિદ્ધ થતાં વર્તમાનપત્રો છે. ૯ અઠવાડિયામાં બે વખત પ્રસિદ્ધ થતા. વર્તમાનપત્રો છે. ૨૨૧ અઠવાડિયામાં એકવાર પ્રસિદ્ધ થતાં
