“ Shreemad Rajchandra was in every way a remarkable man. His mental powers were extra-ordinary. At the same time the moral elevation of his charactor was equally striking. His regard for truth, his adherance to the strictest moral principles in business, his determination to do what he believed to be right, in spite of all opposition, and his lofty ideal of duty inspired and elevated those who came in contact with him. His exterior was not imposing, but he had a serenity and gravity of his own. On account of his vast and accurate knowledge of relegions and philosophy, his wonderful powers of exposition and his lucid delivery, his discoursed were listened with the utmost attention. His self-control under irritating circumstances was so complete, his presence so inspiring that those who came to discuss with him in a defiant and combitive frame of mind returned quite humiliated and full of admiration."
શ્રીમદ્દનું ધામિક વલણ
બાળવયથી જ શ્રીમદમાં પ્રીતિ, સરળતા તથા સર્વ પ્રતિ બ્રાતૃભાવ કેળવવાની ઈચ્છા હતી. તેઓ માણસજાતના બહુ વિશ્વાસુ હતા, અને લેકમાં જુદાઈના અંકુરે જોઈ તેમનું અંતકરણ રડી ઊઠતું; એમનામાં આટલી બધી કમળતા હતી. આવા સાફ, સરળ, વાત્સત્યમય બાળ શ્રીમદ પર તેમના પિતામહ તરફથી ભક્તિના સંસ્કાર રેડાયા હતા. - શ્રીમદુના પિતામહ કૃષ્ણની ભક્તિ કરતા, તેથી તેમની પાસેથી શ્રીમદે કૃષ્ણનાં પદે, તથા જુદા જુદા અવતાર સંબંધીના ચમત્કારે સાંભળ્યા હતા. પરિણામે બાળ શ્રીમદ્દમાં એ અવતારે પ્રતિની પ્રીતિ તથા ભક્તિ બંને આવ્યાં હતાં. આથી બાળલીલામાં તેમણે રામદાસજી નામના સાધુ પાસે કંઠી પણ બંધાવી હતી. તેઓ દરાજ કૃષ્ણનાં દર્શન કરવા પણ જતા. તેના ચમત્કાર જોવાની તેમને ઘણું ઉત્કંઠા હતી, તેથી તે સંપ્રદાયના મહંત બનવાની ઇચ્છા પણ તેમને થતી. આમ બાળવયથી તેમને તેમના પિતામહ તરફથી વૈષ્ણવ સંપ્રદાયના સંસ્કાર મળ્યા હતા. વળી, ગુજરાતી ભાષાની પાઠમાળામાં આપેલ જગકર્તા સબંધીના બોધ તેમને દઢ થઈ ગયો હતો, એટલે તેમને જગકર્તામાં ન માનન પ્રતિ ઘણા આવતી હતી. કોઈ વસ્તુ બનાવ્યા વિના બને જ નહિ તે સિદ્ધાંત દઢ થવાથી જનધર્મની કર્મ સંબંધી માન્યતા તેમને મૂર્ખતાભરી લાગતી. વળી, વૈષ્ણવ સંપ્રદાય કરતાં જેનના આચારવિચાર મલિન લાગતા હતા, તેથી પણ તેમની પ્રીતિ વૈષ્ણવ સંપ્રદાય તરફ બાળપણમાં વિશેષ રહી હતી.
