દર્શન અને ચિંતન આ બન્ને લેખકેનાં લખાણોને આધારે છે. શેરબસ્કીએ ધમકીર્તિનું જીવન Buddhist Logic Vol. 1નીં પ્રસ્તાવના પૃ. ૩૪માં સંક્ષેપમાં આપ્યું છે. જોકે આ પહેલાં ડૉ. સતીશચન્દ્ર વિદ્યાભૂષણે મુખ્યપણે લામા તારાનાથને આધારે History of Indian Logic માં પૃ. ૩૦૩ ઉપર આપ્યું છે. ટિબેટન સાહિત્ય ધર્મકીર્તિનું જીવન વર્ણવે ખરું, પણ તે જેવું વર્ણવે છે તે પૂર્ણપણે અતિહાસિક તે નથી જ, છતાં એ પૌરાણિક જેવા લાગતા જીવનમાં ઘણી બાબતો સાચી હોવા વિશે જરાય શંકા રહેતી નથી. ડૉ. વિદ્યાભૂષણ કરતાં પ્ર. શેરબાકીનું વર્ણન પ્રમાણમાં ટૂંકું છે અને કાંઈક વધારે સત્યની નજીક છે, તેથી અમે તે વર્ણન છે તેવું જ અહીં ઉતારી લેવાનું પસંદ કર્યું છે.
“Dharmakirti was born in the South, in Trima. laya (Tirumalla ? ) in a brahmin family and received a brahmanical education. He then became interested in Buddhism and adhered at first as a lay member to the Church. Wishing to receive instruction from a direct pupil of Vasubandhu he arrived at Nalanda, the celebrated seat of learning where Dharmapala, a pupil of Vasubandhu, was still living, although very old. From him he took the vows. His interest for logical problems being aroused and Dignaga no more living, he directed his steps towards Is'varasena, a direct pupil of the great logician. He soon sur. passed his master in the understanding of Dignaga's. system. Is’varselia is reported to have conceded that Dharmakirti understood Dignaga better than he could do it himself. With the assent of his teacher Dharmakirti then began the composition of a great work in mnemonic verse containing a thorough and enlarged commentary on the chief work of Dignaga.
